Rewards and savings

Cash, bill credits, points, and discounts are not the same.

General guide · Check the official offer rules before relying on a reward.

Promotional language often uses “reward” as a catch-all. The value to your household depends on where the reward can be used, when it arrives, and what you must do to qualify.

Reward typeWhat it usually meansWhat to verify
Cash paymentMoney paid to you or deposited into an account.Minimum threshold, payout method, timing, fees, tax paperwork, and clawback conditions.
Cashback or statement creditA rebate or credit tied to a purchase or account. It may not be withdrawable cash.Eligible purchases, redemption steps, expiration, and whether it reduces a bill or pays out.
Bill creditAn amount applied to a specific provider's future bills.Which bills qualify, when the credit posts, monthly usage limits, transferability, and what happens if service ends.
Points or milesUnits redeemable through a program, often with changing redemption value.Expiration, blackout limits, redemption options, fees, and current cash-equivalent value.
Discount or couponA lower price on a qualifying purchase or service period.Regular price after the offer, required purchase, auto-renewal, and total cost over your intended period.
Conditional bonusA reward earned only after specific actions, spending, referrals, or a waiting period.Eligibility, qualifying activity, time limits, exclusions, caps, and possible reversal.

Count only the value you can actually use

  1. Read the official terms, not just the headline.
  2. List the required spend, fees, subscription, and time commitment.
  3. Check whether the reward is cash or restricted to one provider or store.
  4. Subtract required costs from the value you expect to redeem.
  5. Record it as pending until the reward is issued and verified.

Referral disclosure: If a publisher may benefit when you use a referral link, that relationship and the reward should be stated clearly near the recommendation. Never assume the publisher's benefit is cash.

Use the bill comparison calculator to include introductory prices, monthly charges, and one-time switching costs in the same estimate.
