Internet cost checklist
Compare the internet bill you’ll actually pay.
Plan prices can leave out equipment, taxes, installation, and the rate after a promotion. Before switching, write down your current bill and compare the full cost for the same period.
What to put in the comparison
- Base plan rate and the date it changes
- Modem, router, extender, or gateway rental
- Taxes, regulatory fees, and one-time installation charges
- Upload speed, data caps, and network-management terms
- Promotion length and regular price after the promotion
- Early termination, return-equipment, and restart fees
- Any referral credit or discount, its timing, limits, and whether it is cash
Estimate first-year cost
Add all monthly charges for the promotion period, then the full regular rate for the remaining months. Add one-time charges and subtract only discounts you are eligible to receive. Keep recurring savings separate from one-time credits.
Need-based speed: Choose a speed that fits your household’s actual use. A faster plan is not automatically a better value if you do not need the extra capacity.
Check support and alternatives
If you may qualify for a federal phone or internet discount, read our Lifeline eligibility guide. If you are comparing a wireless hotspot or mobile plan, use our mobile bill checklist.
Before making a change
Check availability at the exact address, confirm the equipment return process, and save the current provider’s cancellation terms. This site does not cancel, enroll, or switch service for you.
Use our bill comparison calculator to include introductory prices, monthly charges, and one-time switching costs.
